Pest Library – Food Pests – Grain Weevil

Facts: Grain Weevil

Name: Sitophilus granarius

Appearance: 1/8” to ¼” in length, generally dark in color. Their pointed mouth parts are the most distinguishable characteristic.

Habit: There are many different species of weevil in the US, many with different physical and habitual traits. Some species are drawn to light and can be attracted to homes at night, making easy access around damaged window and door seals. Some species are relatively strong flyers, while others do not possess the ability to fly at all.

Health/Damage Concerns: Weevils infest a variety of food products and can do lots of damage in a short period of time. Food production, storage, and packaging industries should be aware of this pest as it can contaminate stored food and damage live crops.

Diet: Grains, spices, and other dry food products.

Reproduction: Like many food infesting insects, female grain weevils will lay their eggs inside of food materials like broken grains and kernels, allowing larvae to immediately have a meal upon hatching.
